Short answer: Bring your most recent breathing test and your chest CT scan report. Also bring the CT images (on CD or USB). Do not forget your list of medicines. If you have them, also bring your blood gas test result and your oxygen prescription. With these documents, we can assess on the same day whether bronchoscopic methods are suitable for you. Balloon bronchoplasty and valve treatment are among these methods.
1. Lung function test (spirometry)
The FEV1 and FEV1/FVC values measured after a bronchodilator show the stage of COPD. They also show how limited the airflow is. A test done within the last 6 months is ideal. If you do not have one, the test can be repeated at the clinic.
2. Chest CT report and images
The CT scan allows us to tell whether chronic bronchitis or emphysema predominates in the disease. This distinction determines which method is considered. If airway thickening and secretions predominate, balloon bronchoplasty is considered. If air trapping predominates, an endobronchial valve is considered. Not only the report but also the images themselves (on CD or USB) are important.
3. List of medicines and how you use them
Write down the names and doses of your inhalers. Also note how often you actually use them. Add any blood thinners (for planning before the procedure) and your heart and blood pressure medicines too.
4. Blood gas test and oxygen details
If you have one, bring your blood gas test result. If you use oxygen at home, write down the flow rate and how many hours a day you use it. Using oxygen is not a barrier to the procedure. However, it does affect the planning.
5. History of exacerbations and hospital admissions
Note how many flare-ups (exacerbations) you have had in the past year. If you went to the emergency department or were admitted to hospital, write this down too. This information plays a role in the treatment decision.
Tips for the day of your consultation
- Come with a family member or someone close to you. A second listener is helpful during the consultation.
- Write down your questions in advance. For example: “Will it help me? What are the risks? What does the cost include? How many days should I stay in Istanbul?”
- If you are coming from outside Istanbul, you can send your documents in advance via WhatsApp. The first consultation can be held online. Details: Treatment in Istanbul · Patients from abroad
